I guess you’d say I did not
move around much in 50 years because I live only four miles from where I lived
in my high school days. I gave Uncle
Sam two years of that time, married, and raised two sons, and I’m still running
my own excavating business, and still married to the same woman.
I’m
always looking for a way to make the “big buck” and in 1994, I hit upon the
idea of raising ostriches. After checking out the market I was convinced that
ostrich meat would eventually replace beef because of its taste and low-fat
quality.
So
I bought four ostriches and after raising them for a year, I bought two extra
and they started to lay eggs. Risking
life and limb to gather eggs and incubate them, we hatched several batches of
baby ostriches, which eventually ended up in our freezer.
Needless
to say, the lucrative market never materialized, and putting up with the
temperament of Papa Ostrich got to be too much. So after four years, I gave up, and went to a friendlier
livestock and one of a more controllable size
¾
miniature horses.
One of
these days I may get old enough to retire, but when I do, it will only be to
start another business less demanding.
Got to keep going to hopefully, out-run old age!
