Letter From Jim Lumber

Dear Jim And Jane

I always look forward to your notes about the class. I will be interested in working toward a reunion event somewhere in this area similar to what we have had in the past. Other classmates may wish to go farther but I’m really only interested in doing something in the area. Once again I applaud what you are doing. It’s nice for all of us.

Class Reunion

I had a meeting with Jimmy Lumber and Phyllis Bauer at Phyllis’s house in McHenry September 18; they suggested we plan on a class reunion on a weekend between September 21 and October 12 2002.

Enclosed is a post card we would like all members of the class of “52” who would attend the reunion to return as soon as possible. We need to have your response by July 15th. This will give us an idea on where you would like to go, also include any ideas on what activities to include during our time together. This is the greatest class ever to come out of Grant Community High School, I know you have creative ideas so lets hear from you.

Lucky Spooner has generously offered to donate the music for the evening activities.

We are trying to find a member of the class with a lap top computer who could set up a power point presentation using pictures loaned to us from all members of the class. It would be great to have during a cocktail hour.

There are no plans on making this reunion more then the class of “52” but if you have a close friend from another Grant High school graduating class, they are welcome to join us.

Received a letter from Vivian “Clayburn” Welch

The year after the reunion she and her husband will have been married 50 years, She said it doesn’t seem that long ago.

Ed portzen stopped by and visited with Vivian the other day. They both went to the same grade school in Round Lake and there was a lot of catching up to do.

I want to publicly thank Vivian; she is the only member of the class to send a contribution toward the cost of my effort to keep the class in contact with each other. I haven’t asked for help, but I appreciate her thoughfullness.

Email From Tom Brotherton

Hi Jim,

I have installed the Ameritech DSL line and I am really impressed.  It is lightning fast and "always on."  I run another computer and can have both of them on at the same time, each with a different Internet connection and have only one phone line.  I am on now with the Ameritech DSL and can have the other computer connected with my regular dial up service, American Express On Line.   I also have two browsers with mail programs (Internet Explorer and Netscape) running on the DSL simultaneously.  It was a little tricky getting it set up as Ameritech makes it difficult to use anything but the Netscape software they include with the package.  My phone line is also open for incoming calls when I am on line too, no need for a separate line.

You will be pleased with the service when it comes your way.  I know Crystal Lake has it as I see a poster from there on the Ameritech DSL chat rooms.  There have been so difficulties in Illinois with older COM lines being troublesome and users are angry with Ameritech for not upgrading the lines when the service is sold at premium prices.  The quality of service depends also on how far you are from the terminal; feet matter.   I am only about 300 feet straight line from their building here in downtown Madison, doesn’t know the actual feet of line to get there.  They use the existing lines here, as the stuff is fairly new anyway.  Some of the Chicago lines are from the 20's and totally out of date and should have been replaced tears ago, even without DSL on the scene.  ( I hit "t" in years in error instead of "y" and decided to leave it, as it is appropriate!)

Bye now, Tom Brotherton

Second E-Mail From Barbara Swiderski

Thanks for the newsletters; they were great, sure brought back a lot of good memories.  The picture of the fishing buddies was nice, I sure would not have recognized any of them, but of course we all do change.   All the articles were interesting and fun to read, please keep them going.

Please keep me posted on the class reunion next year, I certainly will be There where ever it may be.  By the way you asked about Ed Cunningham,

well he is married to my sister-in-laws sister and they are still living up that way, will probably see that at my great nieces graduation in June.  I have been in contact with Jackie Stagg (Grogan).  She is in contact with quite a few of the graduates of 1953.

I was so surprised to see that one of our classmates lives in Naples

Florida, I lived there for 30 years, sure would have been nice had I known, but of course didn't have a computer then.  I moved to Florida from Wildwood Illinois, we moved to Gainesville and worked for the VA hospital.  We went for a visit to Marco Island and fell in love with it, so we moved down there, we managed a condominium for a few years and then my husband Bill went into his own business.  Bill died in 1979, went fishing, got our boat stuck on a sand bar, tried to get to land and was sucked down by a very rough current and he drowned, it was rough for a few years and then I met Jesse Komorny, he had three kids, ages 9, 11 and 13, well we got married and raised his kids, we were married 18 years and he decided he didn't like marriage any longer, so we got divorced, I retired from County Government in Naples and moved to Chesapeake to be closer to my sister and her family.  I got tired of sitting around so went back to work, am now working for the City of Chesapeake and like it a lot, it keeps me busy and out of trouble.  I have a stepdaughter (Bill's daughter) living here in Chesapeake, her husband is in the Navy, they have a little boy, so I have a cute grandson that I see quite a lot of.  Thought I would give you a quick version of my life for the past 30

some years.

E-Mail From Donna “Casey” Cushing

Hey Jim have you decided on where we are going for the reunion?  Let me Know.  Donna

E-Mail From Shirley “Dart” Campbell

I vaguely remember your name. I heard from Barbara Swiderski. I did not graduate in 1952, but I would have. I left school in my junior year. I was looking for an old friend and after answering the questions in Classmates; I found my name on the roll.

My maiden name is Dart, my married name is Campbell.

It is funny, I haven't thought of Shirley Krull in years and I was a bridesmaid at her wedding.

I would love to hear from you again. You can reach me at shirley@kua.net.

Perhaps with a little memory jog, your face will come to me.

Thanks for writing.

Shirley

Second E-Mail from Shirley “Dart” Campbell

Hi, Jim

I certainly appreciate what you are willing to do. I know I am probably not entitled to the newsletters since I did not graduate from Grant. You are a good man. Thanks

I live in a 5 bedroom, 3-bath house on Lake Toho in Kissimmee.  Now that the kids are grown, it’s too big for us so we have it for sale. I will let you know when that happens and the new address.

Everyone wants to live on this lake because The Bass masters have their fish tournaments here, plus the view is outstanding, however no one wants to pay the price. So, it may take some time.

Third E-Mail from Shirley “Dart” Campbell

Hi, Jim,

Thank you so much for the newsletters. They were wonderful. I did not remember everyone, however, just reading the names of the towns and places I know about, brought back such wonderful memories. What a pleasant treat. Thank you again.

Letter From Dorothy “Lennon” Converse

I got some information from Winnie “Pokryfke” Tascher about you doing all this work for the class of “52”. She sent me your newsletter, which I was, really amazed at all the work you put into this. Especially shocked to see how many of the classmates who have passed on.

To get to the point I’M wondering if you know, I’m sure you do if any of the officers or anyone from the Class of “53’ are doing anything like you are doing. I’ve never been back to a class reunion and I’m sure there no doubt has been one. Since we moved away right after I graduated no one had any forwarding address other then my Grand parents.

Since my husband retired from the military we now reside in Arizona Before that of course we were in many places due to his career.

Any info you could get me I’d love to have. Unfortunately I do not have e-mail. Have access to our son’s but I myself have not become computer literate. Son’s e-mail sarahconverse@netscape.net

Yours truly
