Am leaving for Florida on Oct 30 so have a lot of things to do.

Riverview FL. 33569

 E-mail From Sue Floto

For myself I would not be interested in music and dancing, but as I'm not sure I'll be there my vote doesn't apply.  Hope you have Happy Holidays!

Note: Can someone talk Sue into coming?

E-Mail from Rita Frankenstin

Hi Jim, I would prefer to just sit around & talk--you may get music that is toooo loud for us old folks. Ha!  But then what ever you do you can’t please everyone. Have a Happy Holiday season.

E-Mail Barbara Swiderski

Hi, I think music and dancing would be fun, especially if we can get some good 50's music. If people don't want to dance they can sit around and talk. MY VOTE   IS FOR MUSIC AND DANCING. I would enjoy doing both talking and dancing. Barb Brown

Dear Jim,

Since I'm almost sure not to be able to attend the reunion, (I have a

Cruise to Alaska on the agenda), I don't think I should vote for the

others.  I'll have to be with you-all in spirit.

Keep up the wonderful work on behalf of all the classmates.

HI - just a fast reply - yes - dancing would be nice or talking is OK too - we are flexible in your plans - also - we can NOT get into your attachments so we have missed some news - the reunion is Sept 28th is that correct - we want to save that date - Sept is getting busy already.  Did you receive the money I sent awhile back?   Was there a Nov newsletter - if so I didn't get one?  Have a great holiday and we will talk soon.    Art

Note From Gerry “Krippner” Spears

Hi Jim.  It was Ronald Hill.  69 years of age of Fox Lake.  I believe he

was just a year ahead of us? In the Herald Newspaper November 20th Really running getting everything together to get out of here but will try to get the picture off to you and a bio.  Will not be able to get email for a few days after today, as southern IL does not have AOL.  Then it will be as we can, probably every few days when we can pick it up.  Take care.  Gerry

E-Mail From Bill Swanson 12/23/2001

Jim, First, Thanks for the newsletter. It is very informative and it's nice to hear how folks are doing.

Secondly, the book we're putting together for the reunion.  You can figure on no cost. This will be our contribution to a successful reunion.  I/we will get with Phyllis in Feb. regarding what we will need to put out a good memory.

Have to wait until Feb., as Jan. is a very hectic time for us.  We print for a presidential function and a large Louisiana function both around Feb. 1st. Really looking forward to a few days with all in Sept.  By the way, we vote for music. Thanks for all you have done.

Happy Holidays. Bill Swanson

Hi Jim,

Happy New Year to you & yours. Am sorry to be late getting back to you but with the holidays and all have been busy.

Want to thank you for all the interesting info and newsletters you've been sending, really appreciate them.

Wanted to send a little bio for the newsletter or whatever you want to do with it.

After school and a few odd jobs, I got married in '58 and moved to Wis.  Where Jack worked for AC Sparkplug, building Titan Missile parts.

There we had our first daughter Jodi, she and her family (husband & 2 sons) live near us here in Fl.  Sons ages 18 & 9. From WI Jack was offered job in Foreign Diplomatic Service, which we accepted, in 1962.  We were assigned to Athens, Greece and there had our 2nd daughter Jaci; I had to fly to Tripoli, Libya to have her who now lives in the DC area.  She is an EMT and is working as 911 Operator for the county of Prince William in VA. She has 1 daughter age 9. Over the next few years and countries around the globe, we we're assigned to Bangkok,

Thailand, where our son was born. He lives near us here in Florida. After his Navy stint, where he was a Medic, he went on to school and is a nurse for a few Dr.s in a small clinic here.

He has 1 daughter 10, and a son 9. We live in a little town called Homosassa just 70 miles north of Tampa on the gulf coast.

We have a fantastic river, we love to boat on, and we are just "retired" now and love it. My best to you & yours, and hope to see a lot of the class at the re-union.

Oral will be at the reunion she lives in Florida here is her e-mail address.

“ Before the reunion Oral and Jack will be going to Africa for 2-3 months”

We don't have a scanner here, however, so anything that needs scanning should go to you.

I am having lunch with Nancy Arnesen-Williamson to morrow.  She lives in Palm Springs, a the west end of The Valley.  (We are at the east end.)  It is about 25-30 mins from here, depending on the traffic, which is getting heavier by the day.  Too many people have discovered this bit of Paradise on Earth.  I'll be taking her picture with my digital camera, so I will send you a copy.

Here is a picture of Nancy (Arnesen) Williamson taken today in her back yard.  She is looking wonderful.  We had a lovely day with lunch at a great Mexican-Southwest restaurant and then checked out some great art, garden and antique shops, all the while getting reacquainted and visiting.

E-Mail From Nancy “Arneson” Williamson 01/14/2002

Hi Jim,

Although I'm "lively", I really have no preference as to your request for a vote for music/dancing. I'll go along with everyone else. Had a very nice visit with Phyllis Werhan Bauer last week. Was fun to catch up on the last 50 years!

Jim...Just letting you know Juanita March passed away on March 4, 2002 Cordele Georgia. She had been on dialysis for several years, had a hip replacement, and lost a foot to diabetes among other problems. A tough few years... Looking forward to the reunion. You've done a wonderful job with the newsletter. It's such a bright spot when it arrives. As soon as my memory clicks in I will send a donation to help keep it going (and the other requested items). See you in September!

Letter From Miss Krause To Phyllis 04/06/2002

What a pleasant surprise! A letter from "Miss Krause" has been received, written in her still beautiful penmanship. She was our neighbor when we lived on Hwy. 134, as she boarded at "Aunt Kate Graham's" next door. What a dear lady -- PJB

607 Sixth St. Mosinee, WI

Dear Phyllis and Class of '52,

One day last week, my mailbox produced a "heart stopper" -- a big, fat letter, return address: Jim Umbarger, Jr. And what a delightful surprise when I opened the envelope! The 50th Anniversary of your graduation from Grant was announced. How I'd love to be with you again! Have you any idea what fifty years have done to me?

Although I still drive around our little city for groceries or such, and only in the daytime, I'd hesitate to drive the 250 miles alone. I'd try to drive straight through -- no stops. My John (Payton) would make me take the dog along when I'd come here from Fox Lake alone. The dog required "pit stops".

Let me know more about the gathering, and if I can get my niece, who lives at Long Lake (Ingleside) to drive for me I'd love to come. I'm quite sure there isn’t very many who would remember me other than you and Jim Lumber, but I'd surely enjoy renewing "Auld Acquaintances".

My love to you Phyllis and Greetings to all, Claire E. Payton

The Country Inn & Suites is fine with me. Count me in for the group rate. I will probably be staying more nights than anyone else since I have other obligations in the area. I'm looking forward to this reunion and am hoping most everyone alive will be there. Thanks again Jim for all your efforts.

Phyllis I sent Jim Umbarger some pictures and some history of myself a short time ago. Let me know if that is sufficient. If not, I can send you more about me--whatever. I'm bringing my golf clubs with me this trip. I'd love to play a round with you and your husband. I plan on spending some time in the area. I have two brothers that live in the area. One in Wauconda and the other in Freeport.

I just read the letter from "Miss Krause ", which you sent. I'll be flying into Milwaukee when I come. I have to go up to Green Bay, then Shawno, and Clintonville. I can drive over to Mosinee and pick up Claire and take her to her nieces, but I can't drive her back. Let me know if I can help.

My best to everyone,

Gordy

Letter From Rita “Frankenstin” Vogel 04/10/2002

Rita sent me a picture from her school years; her picture is not in the schoolbook as most of us are.

HI Jim I will be signing up soon and my sister Sharon Rogers Nagel will be my companion, as I will be staying at her home in McHenry IL. For that weekend as is so close to every thing. HI Jim, good news I was able to reach Carla Andrew Bales over the phone I called 411 for information and got her phone number in Gibsonton FL. As I read she was there in the newsletter it seems she and Donna Casey were looking for me when they heard I was living in Florida.  Carla and I met for lunch on 04/18/2002 in Riverview Florida Which is about 8 miles south of where I am, we had a great visit together at her RV Park she plans on coming on the 28th of September to tour Grant High that day we will all have a wonderful time together. I also heard from Jean Robin Hill bye for now and God bless you. Peg in Tampa.

Letter From Phyllis To Sue Floto & Bonnie Sagel

I had a nice visit with Barb (Johnson) Yung the other day.  They still live on the Yung farm, but not where they used to live.  Some years back they built a house next to the old folk’s farmhouse on Miller Road (in which their daughter and her family now live) and she keeps busy with her family’s activities.  Bill has had some heart problems in the past few years, involving by-pass surgery.  Barb is in good healthľor at least as good as it can be when you get to be our age!

We both expressed disappointment that you are not sure you will be coming to the 50th Class Reunion in September. We would love to see you and visit with you, Jim Umbarger is working very hard to make this reunion very special and a grand success.  Of course, it will only be “very special and a grand success” if there is an excellent attendance.

We hope you will be able to fit this special “once in a life time event” into your schedule and join 29th and us all on September 28th.

Hope to see you then –

Note from Barbara “Swiderski” Brown 04/11/2002

Just a quick note to send you a couple of pictures, I couldn’t find any from school; since we had the flood in Florida I lost a lot of them. I am enclosing my check for $50.00 and another one for $10.00 to help with the mailing of the quarterly letters etc. I really appreciate all the work you put in to them, they are so interesting to read and keep up with the news.

I am really looking forward to the class reunion; I have started to check on prices for plane tickets, so hope to have some dates confirmed in a few weeks.

Again, thanks for all the hard work, see you in a few months.

     Your classmate,

New E-Mail address & phone number for George & Dorothy Vermillion in Barefoot Bay FL (561) 664-5542  georgedv@msn.com

The 24 people with E-Mail address have already read this, so for everyone else.

I had an idea after watching a very funny commercial on television about two girls trying to out do each other at a class reunion one girl was bragging about her new car and the other girl countered by bragging about the guy she went to the prom with. You must see the commercial to appreciate the funny part.

Can any of you remember who you went to the prom with, I went with Leora Rostad if my memory is correct, I think we went to the Chevy Chase night club on Milwaukee avenue near Wheeling after the dance. Did any of you go to the same place?

Send me with some stories and tell me whom you went with.

I hate to end on bad news but there are two classmates that need your prayers to day.

Stu Koutny is in very serious condition in intensive care at the VA Hospital in North Chicago I just talked to Stu’s wife Vivian. (847) 395-4005. 05/01/2002

Also Rosemary Kay Saxby sent me an e-mail and told me of some very serious health problems she has, She also expressed a desire to be with us in September if possible.

Note From Peggy “Rogers” Krotz 05/10/2002

I heard from Donna Casey Cushing today, we are meeting for dinner Thursday evening. She called me to say she is coming to Mcdill AFB in Tampa with her hubby that day.

So sorry to hear about Stu, I had so much fun with him on double dates with Jackie Stagg.  I wish I was up there I could go see him.  By the way I was asking about Patti Orth, sorry about the wrong spelling of her last name.  Her sister Marilyn was a year behind us, she graduated with Jackie Stagg.  I was just wondering about them, we all were pretty close.

Barb Brown

Here is part of the letter sent by Claire E. (Krause) Payton, to Phyllis (Werhan) Bauer recently.

Indeed, I do remember Gordy Cole. When I taught first and second grades at Round Lake School -- when that was the only school in Round Lake -- Gordon was in second grad there. So I remember him as "a dear little one." Thank him profusely for me for his kind offer. Does he realize what a big state Wisconsin is? I suppose coming all the way from California a few hundred miles more doesn't seem like much. I appreciate the loving thoughts that prompted such generosity.

I must tell you about my 92nd Birthday Party. (I have a dear friend, Gail, who has adopted me as her "life line." When she gets tired and edgy -- she says -- she comes to me. We go out to lunch somewhere and we laugh and talk and forget what troubles are.) Gail planned a luncheon at our favorite eating-place for fifteen of my relatives and about as many farmer neighbors and friends from out at "the lake." My niece and nephew were visiting me, so Gail asked them to take me to Wausau to shop. Then, because Stage Stop was where she and I usually went for lunch, my niece was to take me there at noon and Gail would join us there. Therese, my niece, obeyed and we came in a little after 12. As I came into the "special occasion" dinning room, everyone jumped up and yelled, "Surprise! -- Happy Birthday!" And indeed, it was a surprise because my birthday wasn't that day, but the next. It was such a wonderful party. I didn't know that so much love and devotion flourished in Holder! There were gifts and flowers and an enormous birthday cake! No cake could hold 92 candles but she tried with 35 maybe -- for the friends who celebrated the day! This recalled another surprise Birthday cake -- Remember? *

Just in case I can't make it to the Reunion, I must tell you I've survived cataract eye surgery, colon pre-cancer surgery, and breast cancer surgery, since I saw you in 1992. Now I'm healing from skin cancer surgery on my hands and face.

Enough woe. Will keep you posted.

Love to all, Claire E. Payton

*Those who were in Speech Class our senior year will recall the surprise birthday party we planned for "Miss Krause" about November 16th. (Don't recall the exact date of her birthday.) We all chipped in and Jean Robin ordered the large sheet cake, and her brother Butch (he didn't have classes until the afternoon session) picked it up and delivered it to the back door by the cafeteria. (Class was held in the cafeteria eating area.) "Miss Krause" was puzzled and demanded to know where Jean was going when she got up to go and get the cake from Butch. Jean came in with this beautiful cake and somehow managed to drop the cake! We all wanted to cry, and as I recall, Jean did cry! This is where "It is the thought that counts" is very apropos.

E-Mail From Bill Swanson

Jim & Phyllis,
First, I want to thank you both for all the work you are putting in to have a successful reunion.  I saw the time spent by my wife's classmate in organizing her reunion.

Secondly, Beth and I plan to be there!  I finally have found time to dig back thru the correspondence and found the reservation form.  I will send it (with a check) tomorrow.
We haven't made plane or hotel reservations yet but will do so soon.
Life has been quite hectic for the last three months.  Our small printing business (3 1/2 People) has been renting space & services from a larger printing company for the last 7 1/2 years. Good arrangement.  Then, on Feb. 4, the owner told us he was filing Chapter 7 (Liquidation) and closing down on Feb. 15, which he did.  We have been scrambling to stay in business, trying to relocate, etc. to no avail at this point.  Then, Beth's dad (she lost her Mom 1 year ago) came up with a prostate problem & 2 aneurysms in his leg arteries.  Worries, Doctor visits, etc.  That plus the business, an apartment, a house, my 92 year old Mom, an aging cat...  Not much time for much of anything else.  We still haven't had a chance to look at the disc Phyllis sent regarding the reunion book but we will very soon.  We still plan to print the book for the reunion even if we have to call in some favors!!!

So, count us in.  And please keep up the good work.  I have talked to George Vermillion & Jim Kramer. I see George has signed up & Jim has said he was going to do so. I hope he does.

Keep in touch.

                                   Prom Memories

By Phyllis J. (Werhan) Bauer

Our Class of ’52 Newsletter editor has requested memories associated with the Proms we attended.  To tell the truth, the Proms are not among the most happy memories of my high school years, because I had an early curfew and was not allowed to go just anywhere for dinner after the Prom.  I didn’t mind all that much, but it put a damper on the whole evening for my date.

In contrast, I am enjoying the fun my granddaughters are having as they experience their Proms as students at McHenry High School - East Campus.  There are many differences in the way they are experiencing their Proms, as compared to ours back in the ‘50’s.

Typically, their day starts with having their hair “done” in an attractive up-do.  If their nails have not been lengthened and polished in the days before, that too might be on the agenda for the day as well as perhaps picking up the dress from the place it has been taken for alterations.  Back in the 50’s, most of us did our own hair and nails, and mom did the alterations.

By afternoon and amidst many calls to and from their friends and dates, the “Prom Princesses” manage to get their make-up on and finally their dresses.  They are then ready to have their pictures taken with their dates and other friends.  (All of this was not accomplished, however, without a little nervous hysteria in between.)

The pictures might be simple ones in the back yard near a blooming bush, or taken with a lovely white arbor rented by the parents of a friend.  The picture taking continues when each couple exits the main entrance of the high school and moves down the 15 steps to be announced by a Master of Ceremonies and then continue down the red carpet on the sidewalk where Colonial lanterns festooned with ribbons have been placed along each side.  The red carpet leads to the bus loading on a side street and everyone along the sidewalk has an opportunity to admire the young people as they make their Promenade to the bus.  Moms, dads and grandparents take as many pictures as they like.  It is a very special way to formally start the evening.

The buses whisk them away to the hotel where formal pictures will be taken, dinner will be served and dancing to the sounds of the latest and most popular music will take place.  At the conclusion of this event, the buses take them back to the school where the revelers return to the cars they came in and head off to the various post-Prom parties that many of the parents host in their homes.  They return to their own homes in the wee hours and after not too many hours of sleep, they head off for picnics, boat rides and other activities to bring them to the point of utter exhaustion.

One of the things that is different at McHenry High School, from our high school days, is that underclassman are allowed to go as the date of a Junior or Senior.  Another thing that is different is that you can go without a date.  During the Promenade this was evident when singles were introduced, as well as a heavyset threesome with a girl on each arm of the guy.  Our grandson, who had a water polo match to attend first, asked one of his buddies who was going single, to escort his date for the Promenade, since he would not be able to get to the event until a little later.  I think it is wonderful the students are allowed to go as a single.  And, I give the students a lot of credit for taking advantage of the opportunity to go, even if it is without a date.  No one need stay home and in a state of self-pity for not having a date, as I probably would have done.

Gavin Grade School Memories

By Phyllis J. (Werhan) Bauer

Seeing a picture of a local school picnic in a recent newspaper brought some memories back to me of my own grade school days.  I’m sure you remember our school picnics in the grove of trees at Sabatini’s.  (I’m not sure if that was it’s name then or currently, but for many years, it went by that name.)

I also remember tobogganing on Adam Adams’ hill.  (Would #9, middle row, next to Rose Vermillion be Adam Adams?)  After we would hurriedly eat our lunches during the noon hour, Mr. Kennel, our principal and 7th and 8th grade teacher, would take us across Wilson Road to the hill, about a half mile or so away.  Can you imagine that going on today with liability considerations?  As I recall, it was an activity reserved for 7th and 8th graders.

Of course we had to dress warm for cold winter activities in those days. We wore what we called “leggings” to school all winter long. Today they would be called ski pants. We had to tuck our skirts or dresses inside those leggings so as not to get them wet from the snow. And rubber galoshes that fit over our shoes.

How about those Patrol Boys?  We didn’t dare get out of line, as they would put our names on their dreaded list which would then be turned into our principal, Mr. Kennel. Getting “out of line” would consist of talking to anyone in front or in back of you, standing up when the bus was moving, and of course any fighting or aggravation. The school bus rides I remember are quite unlike the “free expression” on the school bus rides of today, where the drivers must put up with a lot more distraction.

Ray Boettcher was our janitor as well as school bus driver. There were two runs, as I recall. He’d fill one bus up and deliver those students to the corners near their homes -- he would then return to school and pick up another load of students and deliver them. The second run of students would spend their time playing on the playground equipment, or playing hopscotch or jump rope. At least that is what the girls did.  I imagine the boys were involved in a short game of baseball, or something like that. If I remember correctly, the two loads were for two different areas of the school district.

Do you have any particular memories of grade school or high school that you would like to share?

Dear Jim.

Sorry I haven't written sooner but I thought I had told you some time ago that I would be unable to attend the reunion.

We are making many trips to Wisconsin regarding my follow up cancer care and to visit family but we will not be in the area in September. I am doing well and my follow up tests have all been good.

I keep in touch with Bonnie (Sagel) Virnala and usually get to see her once a year when we get to Florida.  Other than that, and the information I have received from you, I haven't had any contact with fellow graduates for many years. We moved from Wisconsin to Arkansas seven years ago and while I've met many people here from Wisconsin and Illinois, so far none of them have been from the Fox Lake area.

I wish you good luck with all your efforts for the reunion and I hope you will have a very good turn out.

Sue (Floto) Thelen

Note From Tom Hansen 06/15/2002

He has moved to: 418 Ponderosa Dr., Colorado Springs, CO 80911. He is not in communication with e-mail as the computer hasn't been unpacked yet. He also says they have no recent pictures.

This is what else he says:

Got to get this off before I put it off again. As you see we moved back to Colorado Springs. We made a mistake by moving to Joplin, MO and we are now where we belong.

We won't be getting back for the Reunion. Bought an older home that needs lots of TLC and money.  Have about 95% completed on the inside except for the kitchen which will take all new cabinets and appliances.  Then comes the outside. All is not bad for we got into a very nice neighborhood.

I'm sure we will miss seeing all the kids I went to school with, grade and high school.

Take care, say hello to all and God Bless,

Tom and Leona

E-Mail From Phyllis 07/11/2002

Ken Gamble was my date, and Jim Wisner was Barbara Johnson’s date.  Ken wasn't from Grant -- he was out of school -- an "older man" of 21 years!  This was in 1952, our senior prom.

E-Mail From John Stob 06/23/2002

I know this is a late date and that you are working very hard on the "Bios". I just got a surprise in the mail from the University of Tulsa where I attended and played basketball. The University of Tulsa Athletic Hall of Fame is going to induct my teammates and myself into the Hall of Fame in November for our outstanding season in 1954-55. I am proud of this award and of course will attend.  Just wanted to let you know about a small highlight in my life. Wonders never cease. I trust and hope all is going well and am sorry that we cannot attend the reunion.

Warmest regards, John Stob

This is the last news letter before the reunion in September, enclosed is the final list of those signed up to attend.

I may do a news letter once or twice a year after the reunion to keep up the mailing list if there is any interest in it.

I enjoyed meeting everybody and talking to them. Thanks for all your effort in bringing this memorable event altogether. See you tonight at the Country Club.

What a great evening Sunday night was!  "A good time was had by all."

It was very nice, and many said how much they enjoyed it and how the music fit so well.

Email From Barbara “Swiderski” Brown 10/02/2002

Hi, Just a quick note to let you know just how great the reunion was. I had a blast from the past and it was the most fun I have had in a long Time. You sure did a great job on planning this party and everyone looked so well and I know everyone had a great time. I know it took a lot of hard work and hope someone will plan another one. The reunion book was fantastic; I am putting it with my yearbook. Again Jim thanks for the wonderful time and great music. I told everyone at work today just how wonderful it was and to get a copy of the prom picture sure made my night. Keep me posted on what is happening, I will be up next year and will try to look you up.  By the way if you get any pictures that were taken by people let me know if I can get some copies.

Your classmate barb

Yes, I too received a gorgeous floral arrangement from the Knaacks.  Very generous on their part, but unnecessary, as it was a pleasure to be part of the planning and execution of the event.

I talked to Charlene Lumber Jankirk this evening (she lives nearby) and she has Ed Rostad's address from their reunion last year.  She will give it to me when she finds the booklet.  Too bad we didn't think of contacting Class of '53 members for his address to get hers.

Donna (Casey) Cushing, Barbara (Baker) Hill, Bonnie (Westin) Clarkson and I were in attendance at the recent gathering of GCHS alumni held at Marvela's Banquet Hall.

The first Wednesday of May and October are the days this get-together is held at Marvela’s, Grand Ave. and Rt. 59, and the time is 4:00 p.m.  To make a reservation, call Marion Koske at (847) 587-5812.  It is quite informal – simply an opportunity to visit with other alumni and eat supper.

Familiar faces were plentiful.  Among them, you may remember: Joie Robinson and husband Jim Bledsoe; Teenie Severs and husband Lee Wegner; Mary Lou Severs and husband Bud Thennes; Ted Beskow; Bob Irwin; Becky (Glassman) Prosser; Fran who married the late Clyde Koutny; Elaine (Scanlon) Portzen who came with Bonnie, and Bonnie’s brother Larry Westin.

It was a most enjoyable time, especially since I was able to visit more fully with the class of ’52 attendees than what I was able to at the reunion.Perhaps you will be interested in attending this special reunion in the future.

 Best wishes--Phyllis

Unexpected surprise from Fred & Elaine Knaack 10/03/2002

Three days after the reunion I had to go out of town for two days and to my surprise sitting on my door step when Jane an I returned was a beautiful arrangement of flowers sent by Fred and his wife expressing there gratitude on how the reunion turned out. It is nice to know that hard work doesn’t go unnoticed

Email From Ralph Gernhardt 10/04/2002

Thanks for your email about the reunion. I had just found this "Classmates" site and wondered if it worked. Then I got your e-mail that the class reunion was being held the following weekend and already had plans so couldn't make it.
It would have been nice if I could have because it was only a few weeks ago on driving to Elkhorn, WI for a family reunion at my sister's family farm that I drove thru Lake Villa and Fox Lake to see how much it has changed.
However, my life has had many changes since the '50s and has taken many other turns. There were lots of up and downs... but most of them good: military service in Korea, a successful 18 year career in radio, married, children (2), divorced, the music industry (country), grandchildren (3) and for the past 26 years the founder and publisher of Gay Chicago Magazine.
That's in a nutshell. Would have been nice to be at the reunion. Maybe I can make it to the next one.

I can’t believe it.... are they really intending a 60th?  Soooo sorry not to be able to attend. Yes, it's quite possible that I may be able to see the 60th...only God knows for sure.
Imagine!!  Miss Krause, do tell all.  Is she soooo ancient, as one might believe?  What a wonderful experience it must have been for her.  Is she mentally sharp as one might hope?
Since we were making correspondence initially, I have obtained a newer, more up to date computer. Hopefully, I am now able to read .jog files that means pictures in addition to text. I am really a novice at this, it grope every word etc. This new Windows XP is sooo much different than Windows 95.
I realize just how computer inept that I really am. I would love to hear from you just how the reunion went off. I was with you all in spirit, if not, in flesh.
At present, I will have AOL service, free for 6 months. After that time, I expect to make a change to yet another Internet connection. AOL is just too expensive, and there are so many other services available. From friends, I understand that the Wal Mart connection is just about the same as AOL and only at $9.94 per month.  I'll have to look into that after the first of the New Year.
Anyhow, thanks for all of your efforts on behalf of the Class of "52, you have been so wonderful, I hope you really feel that you have been such a benefit to all of us so far-away from any connection with the old class. God Bless, who would have thought?   Many thanks. Large love, Bonnie

Sounds like Miss Krause had a wonderful memory of the occasion, what a super time for her...and all the rest of you folks. No, I don't have the Word program you mention, at present, I'm groping with note pad. They do offer some courses here in the retirement community where I live; maybe I should look into some of them. I am finding Windows XP pretty tough. I have the Windows XP for Dummies book, it's very helpful. Previously, I used the Dummies book for Windows 95, really makes you feel like a "dummy".
I do get some E Mails with pictures attached; so far, I haven't tried to send any.

Just a line to tell you how very much we enjoyed the reunion even though we were not in the class of 52. A lot of hard work went into the planning and we Appreciate your efforts. Everyone we spoke to commented on how well you

Organized the entire weekend. Good Job!!

I came across several old "Bulldogs Barks" that were saved over the years.

These issues are dated 1951 and were printed in the Fox Lake Press.  I do not have a scanner, but if you are interested in reading some, I will be happy to make copies and send them to you. Let me know.

Thanks again for a most enjoyable weekend. Ron and Steph Vermillion

Letter To Doug Ball From Phyllis 10/14/2002

Doug, we've been looking for you to no avail!  Carol Cooney has given me your current address.

Yes, we have had a 50th Class Reunion, held just two weeks ago.  From all reports, it was a fine affair.

We have a booklet with graduation pictures and biographical sketches of most of the class.  Unfortunately, you are on the "missing" page.

Jim Umbarger, who headed up the reunion and has produced a newsletter for the class, for the past two years, will probably be in touch with you.

Since I was responsible for the biographical sketches, would you please write one up and send to me?  It will be placed in the next newsletter.  (Biographical sketch: what you've been doing in the past 50 years in 200 words or less.  Work, military, family, interests, hobbies, etc.)

My husband's cousin, Betty Bauer was a friend with your sister Stephanie.  Betty has lost touch with her and would probably love to have her current address.  Or, I could send her Betty's.

Hope to hear from you soon. Your fellow classmate, Phyllis (Werhan) Bauer

P.S. - no, Dan Werhan was not my father.  He was my stepfather's cousin.

Doug's address is: 1310 Granada Lane, Greensboro, NC 27407 Greensboro, NC.  Phone: (336) 299-9237.

Guess I better update you... that I was happy that I made and really enjoyed the reunion.... An hour before we were to leave for Norfolk, VA on the 6th.... I slipped coming out of the motor home and missed the stairs.  So after emergency, x-rays, scan, etc.... I got my eight-week cast on yesterday.

Have a bad sprain but the worse is the broken heel.  Oh well, so be it... could have been a broken hip or something worse.  With luck I will have it unwrapped for Christmas!  Just think I could have done it for the reunion and came with the cast like I did in high school when I did the other leg. Would not have made the bus ride though!  Anyway... that is the news from here. Thanks for the updates, etc. that get sent along... Gerry

Many thanks to you both, for all of your laborious work planning and executing a successful even.  Thanks to the others that contributed also.

I was saddened by the fact that we could not attend but it worked out great for us.  We went to my wife's family reunion and a grand time.  Met many that she hadn't seen in years (20+).  We had just gotten home and we got a call saying that her one aunt had died from a fall upon arrival back home after the reunion.  So we at least got to see her prior to the unfortunate event.

Again thanks and hope to see you both when we visit in Illinois next summer.

Sincerely, John Stob

Yes Jim, I did receive the booklet, which was about as a professional job that anyone would do.  Thanks again for ALL OF YOUR labor and time.  Hopefully the class appreciates what you have done.  Trust all is well up there in the great Midwest.  We are doing fine here and enjoying some milder weather. Take care and thanks again. John

I received a short note from "Miss Krause" today.  She is fine, after recovering from a very bad cold that brought her down the week after the reunion. She says winter has arrived in her area, with 6 inches of snow.  The trees haven't even had their usual show of color and winter is there.  (We were so lucky to have such beautiful weather for the reunion weekend.)

She sends her love to all of you.

Hi Jim,
I wanted to let you know what is happening here.  I caught a bug shortly after the reunion, which turned into pneumonia.  I haven't been able to shake it, and I've been down just about the whole month of October.  I am finally trying to get back to 'real life', but I'm still under the doctor's care and still taking antibiotics, etc.   I'm sorry this has delayed the photos.  I just haven't had the strength or endurance to work on them.
I'm at the computer and trying to work on them today.  I also apologize for not returning your phone call.  I have rarely come downstairs to check any messages.  I just rely on my family to let me know someone has called.  Sometimes it takes a while for the information to reach me.
I will work on the photos this weekend.  Again, I'm sorry there has been a delay.  I know everyone is anxious to receive them.
Thanks again, Jim, for all you've done and continue to do to keep this extraordinary class in touch.  You're a gem!
Best wishes,
Ruth

We have found Leora Rostad-Kowynia, but sadly, we were about ten days too late.  (See the attached message from the wife of Ed Rostad, Leora's brother.)

I was able to get Ed's e-mail address from Charlene (Lumber) Jankirk's Class of 1951 reunion booklet.  When I e-mailed him, his wife wrote back that there had been a family dispute and that they had lost contact with her quite some time ago.

Although I had tried the Internet search for Leora before the reunion, I did not have her husband's name, so I was unsuccessful in locating her.  Armed with her husband's first name, provided by Ed, I did another search.  The first one I tried was successful, in that a Robert was found, with a birth of June 1932 which would "fit" for being the husband of Leora, but I would have had to pay $10 to get the address.  I tried a different "People Search" and located the address free of charge.

So, the moral of the story is: If at first you don't succeed, try, try again.

Phyllis

Phyllis, we want to thank you for the address and telephone number, it is the right everything, Ed called there, and we just got off the telephone.  You might like to forward this on to some of your classmates;  We just got terrible news; as they say "Tomorrow is promised to nobody, that is why today is a present."  Leora passed away last Saturday of a massive stroke at home, the funeral was this past Wednesday, the 30th.  Ed talked to her husband, and Leora's daughter who came in from Michigan; they were looking for us in recent years too. We are in shock here, although Ed and Leora had not spoken since 1975.  She has three daughters and they are going to be in touch with us.  We are going to send a donation to Make A Wish Foundation in her memory. She was on medicine for high blood pressure; but a few days before she passed on she was not feeling well.

Whatever it was that inspired you to follow through with this project, we appreciate it very much.  I am only sorry the information was more of a happy sort.  God Bless you and your loved ones, and a Happy Holiday Season to all of your classmates.

Email From Phyllis “Werhan” Bauer 11/04/02

In light of the news that our classmate Leora Rostad-Kowynia has passed on, please keep us posted on any deaths of our classmates that you may become aware of.

Also, if you change your postal address or e-mail address, please keep us informed.  Some of the e-mail addresses we have are apparently no longer valid.

On a different note, the experience of being so close to learning the whereabouts of our classmate Leora, only to be one week late has been a reminder to me of how our lives can sometimes take ironic twists and turns.

As you gathered from the e-mail message from her brother Ed’s wife, Leora and Ed had a dispute and had not spoken to one another for about 25 years.  They lost touch with each other as each moved to new locations.

To go back to the beginning of this story, before the reunion, I had tried to find Ed on one of the "People Searches" thinking if I could find him, I’d be able to find Leora, but I was unsuccessful.  Then Charlene Lumber-Jankirk attended our 50th reunion and I learned that Charlene was living just a few blocks from where we live.

A few days after our reunion, I dropped some extra booklets at her place so she could give them to Jim.  In conversation, she talked about the 50th reunion of the Class of 1951 and how certain people such as Ed Rostad hadn't changed at all.  The light bulb went on in my head and I thought, “she must have his address and he could tell us where Leora is.”  The only problem was Charlene didn't have her 50th booklet at hand and was leaving for a week.  She promised to look it up upon her return.

Weeks passed, and I thought she had probably forgotten about it, so I gave her a call to remind her.  A week or so passed and she finally called back with Ed’s address and e-mail.  (She still hadn't found her book and had called Hazel Puckey to obtain the address.)

So then I e-mailed Ed and learned about the estrangement between the two, and you know the rest of the story from my previous message.

Perhaps a better “moral to the story” would be this: if you have an estrangement in your life and would like to be in touch with that person once again, do it now, for tomorrow may be too late.

The e-mail addresses shown in the reunion booklet for Frank Lombardo and Bonnie Sagel-Virnala are incorrect.

Frank's is: lombardos@core.com  (The "s" was missing.)

Bonnie's is: queenbjv38@aol.com

I apologize for these errors.  (Those darn computers -- they are so fussy!)
